A whole life
worth publishing.
Sam, I made Workman’s Illustrated for you for our second anniversary. I wanted to gather nine years of our memories into something you could hold, turn through, and keep.
I filled this first edition with our photographs, our music, the things we love, and the stories that belong to us. Every little detail was a chance to show you that I remember, that I pay attention, and that I love the life I get to share with you.
What started as a way to surprise you became something I want to keep doing: giving you another little piece of our life to keep, every anniversary.

Why a magazine?
I chose a magazine because there are so many different things I want to remember with you. Our pictures, a song that takes us back, a favorite game, an inside joke—I wanted room for all of it, right beside the words I sometimes struggle to say out loud.
I liked that I could make you laugh on one page and tell you how much I love you on the next. I wanted to celebrate our big moments, but I also wanted you to see how much the familiar, everyday parts of being with you mean to me.
I spent months researching, learning, trying layouts, and changing my mind. Through every revision, I kept thinking about you opening it. Would you recognize the memory? Would it make you smile? Would you feel how much love I put into making it yours?
More living.
More pages.
Each anniversary, I want to make you another edition. We can look back at the year, remember what mattered, and save the little things we might otherwise forget. I love imagining us years from now, taking an old issue down and finding a version of our life waiting inside.
I made this space for you to come back to between editions. You can reread my letter, look through our pictures, or just spend a minute with a memory. Your full magazine is there in your hands; these are a few more things I wanted to give you alongside it.
For now, you have your first issue, and I have so much more I want to make with you. We still have plenty of living—and plenty of pages—ahead of us.
From that front porch
to the life we share.
A few moments I’ll always treasure with you.
